Utah, dragged kicking and screaming into The Century Of The Fruitbat *way* faster than anyone expected.

Quoth the judge, stating the obvious: "The State of Utah has provided no evidence that opposite-sex marriage will be affected in any way by same-sex marriage. In the absence of such evidence, the State’s unsupported fears and speculations are insufficient to justify the State’s refusal to dignify the family relationships of its gay and lesbian citizens."

And, of course, the state of Utah has provided no evidence because *no such evidence exists*. All objections, both religious and real, have been conclusively disproven as groundless and irrelevant.

Almost as shocking was how quickly the Utah civil service swung into action. They were writing marriage licenses the same day, and the mayor of Salt Lake City worked overtime marryin' the gays.

I imagine there are civil-rights groups working the ground to help the civil service along here, but still.

The irony is especially lovely: if they hadn't passed an amendment banning same-sex marriage, there would have been nothing to challenge on constitutional grounds.

We still have one county holding out for no good reason. They're going to wind up costing taxpayers money in this, as there will be contempt charges and legal fees incurred by deciding your county doesn't have to abide by the law.

(Last I heard, they're claiming, "We haven't heard anything official yet" which is utter BS and not a legal defense.)

They also struck down the laws against polygamous cohabitation (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/utah-court-ruling-eases-fear-among-polygamists/) - this doesn't open up polygamist marriage (totally different kettle of fish), but it's no longer illegal for polygamous families to live together in Utah.

Glad to see that "God thinks gays are icky" doesn't hold up in court ;)

I am now casting a look at Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and saying

"Utah beat you. Utah. Seriously guys, that has to be embarrassing."

Of course, if Alabama gets there first THEN the shame will be rolled out

They'll still almost certainly get there far before South Carolina.
