It's more that volcanos produce weird instagib things like "lava bombs" - which are medicine ball sized chunks of lava that volcanos spit out up to a mile from the caldera, which cool as they travel forming rock hard balls that if they hit you will crush you before breaking apart releasing the still molten lava inside them and spitting shrapnel everywhere as well.
FWIW, you can tell this guy is a photographer and not a vulcanologist because he's not wearing head protection and some sort of flak jacket.
