Minecraft Is Magic

Nerdy, cute, very well animated, and doesn't require that you know anything about My Little Pony (other than that it exists) or Katy Perry (apparently it's a parody of one of her songs?). Requires very minimal knowledge of minecraft, to wit "at night the monsters come, and some of them explode." There, now you know everything you need.

Jan Animations is wicked cool. The Don't Mine At Night vid you posted was chosen as #1 of the December 2013 fan animations and videos. My all time favorite vid by Jan Animations is Picture Perfect Pony.

Minecraft question: if it's so dangerous to mine at night, why do it? Are diamonds and gold only obtainable at night?

If you go hide indoors at night, you lose half your gameplay time.

Retreating to where it's light, sure, you can build and design, but not mine. Mines are pretty much by definition attached to a dark place where the creepers can spawn.

Extra thing I love about that video: Dude is all "my girlfriend is mining at night! I have to PROTECT her or she'll DIE!"

And, uh, he doesn't.

She's dodging the zombies and confusing the skeletons. And sure, he's taking out things going after her, and that makes it easier for her to mine longer without needing to fight or move on - but without him, she'd still be fine. And she's even got a perfectly workable plan for when she gets cornered by a creeper: She disconnects from the server and respawns back in a safe place. Letting her, if I understand correctly, keep everything she'd collected and not lose it like she would if she died.

Just about the only time he does something she really needs, it's when he builds the bridge to catch her when she falls in the lava - but you can fall into lava by accidentally mining out under your own feet during the day, too, and that's a mistake anyone could make.

Thanks! So, "don't mine at night" isn't really advice that's all that good. It just makes for a catchy lyric. ^_^

It's also good advice, kind of: The monsters come out at night. Mining during the day is safe.

(Again, that's how I understand it. I don't play, I could be wrong about the details)

Monsters come out whenever the light level is low enough. It doesn't matter if you mine at night or day, except near the surface, where more things will come in if they are spawning at night. So yeah, catchy lyric.

[livejournal.com profile] aeduna is quite correct. Actually, if you have a (relatively) safe, established mine, mining is one of the safer things you *can* do at night. What's really dangerous is being outside looking for pumpkins and stuff at night.

Yeah, the well-lit bits of mines are pretty safe. Wandering the woods at night is asking to get ate.

Disconnecting and reconnecting doesn't change your location.

Dying and respawning takes you back to 0,0 or the last bed you slept in.

But if you die, you lose the stuff you've collected, and the server keeps going without you so that creeper you despawned to avoid is going to blow up while you're not there? Or am I misunderstanding?

If there is still someone else in the area when you logout, the creeper may wander off, or blow them up. If no one is there, time effectively freezes, when you reconnect it will still be on top of you. Its like an extreme sort of requires-an-observer quantum effect.

On the plus side, if you blowup and die (not always a certainty if you have armor), much of your stuff will fall to the ground. If no one is there to observe _that_, it will linger timelessly too, and with luck you can run into the area and get it back. Tho this does often lead to a series of short sharp deaths as they run back into a dangerous area to try and get their stuff while poorly equipped from respawning.

Its one of the eerie things the game can throw at you, to be wandering through wilderness, far from anyone else and come across the scattered remnants of a fallen player who hasn't bothered returning to get their stuff.

I like my own tactic. I build by day and have a very controlled mine underground, that is not attached to one of the pregen'd shafts or caves. It lets me mine all night safely. I just throw down a ton of torches in the cleared space as I go. Found a TON of diamond that way, and all the other stuff except emeralds, and there is no great need for those, they are just green stones you can build with if you find nine of them. With the latest updates, I have green stained glass for that.

It's dangerous to mine in the dark. Put down torches.

Night is actually the best time to mine as you can't do anything else at night. Mining tunnels are a lot safer than the surface at night.
