That was a fun read. The "low-radioactivity devices" in use until the 60's may have included the shoe-fitting fluoroscope, and perhaps watches with luminescent dials. (Oooh! Radium has a half-life of 1601 years, so even if that old clock or watch doesn't glow anymore because the zinc sulfide has broken down, you might want to store it out of reach in a well ventilated area.)

I had one of those watches. I loved that thing. I have a clear memory of sitting in bed, staring at it, after being put down for the night; since the only other clear and unambiguously happy memory from that time in my life involves Tie-fighters, it must have blown my wee little mind.
