James May's "why people who object to racism in SF/F are THE REAL RACISTS".

(no, not the famous James May. A completely different James May. Not one you've heard of, I think, although I could be wrong. Point is: Not the famous James May.)

You may, as I did, feel a sense of deja vu at a number of his idiotic statements. That's because his previous many-thousand-word-salad was directed at John Scalzi, who summarised it as "Overthinking, Done Poorly and At Length"

May has not improved either his thinking or his length in the year since that: At the far end of the link is what Word tells me is *one hundred and twenty-seven THOUSAND* words of word salad about how people who object to racism in SF/F are totally as bad as Hitler[1]. And this is "Part 2". One shudders about "part 1".

Ping: [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll, this seems like the kind of thing you'd enjoy laughing at/linking to the unsuspecting/would cry over. And, because of your MPR tag, I feel you deserve this one.

[1]: Bonus: I'm not exaggerating. I dare you to search for the word "Hitler" and see his various sentiments and his followup sentences. Memetic prophylactic recommended.

Ultimately you will regret clicking this link

I have been motivated to coin the phrase "moose poop and snakes". As in "I read a teeny bit further than you did and then bailed like I was in a leaky rowboat on a river of moose poop and snakes."

(I like snakes! But snakes covered in moose poop are likely to be hostile to the world in general and to my flailing self in particular. So. You know. Bailing.)

Sorry for the mystery. I am stalked by trolls and was expecting one or more to start citing me in straw-man arguments.

Anyway, while this guy is describing a real phenomenon, he is doing exactly the same thing he's complaining about: overreacting to the point of loss of credibility, to what is a genuine problem, and making it less likely to be dealt with justly.

He is doing for his detractees what Carter did for the Republicans.

What trolls are you referring to, he asked, having only seen you here and on [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll's journal.

Well, carloshasanax and keithmm are the most likely to feel the compulsion to answer every comment I make by constructing straw men, but there are a few others who are just part-time.

I gave up in the very first paragraph when the author declares tea as sold in Britain to be objectively better than any tea sold in Vietnam.

It's more than five hundred pages long. I certainly would never suggest anyone reading any more than their own personal Train Wreck Syndrome demands, and I will happily admit that for someone without Train Wreck Syndrome there's nothing worth reading there at all.

127,000 words, at approximately 250 words per page, makes ~500 pages.

For comparison, "a novel" is anything over 40,000 words. The first Harry Potter was 77,000 words. John Galt's speech in Atlas Shrugged is a 33,000 word nonstop monologue. Stephen King's "Cujo" is 120,000.

I'd rather read that book which began by outlining the two-thousand-year-old Muslim plot against America and had the protagonist shooting a machinegun at a statue's crotch. (Or something. The details are mercifully vague.)

From the Part 1 introduction:

Increasingly bizarre and circular theories have come about, using words like “privilege,” appropriation,” “intersectionality,” and “cisgendered” together with unfounded assumptions of formalized expressions of bigotry where in fact none exist… It has become a con game and a racket, exploiting guilt and extorting concessions by McCarthy-era accusations and tactics.

Later in Part 1, attacking random commenters:

The post is titled "White womanhood, protectionism, and complicity in injustice for Trayvon." I’ll tell you right now, in principle, it don’t come any more KKK than bullshit like this.

More part 1, part of a huge screed against just Scalzi:

The other irony is that if I did what Scalzi and company do, I would indeed be singling out only gender and race. In reality, the plain proof of who does that is in their Twitter responses, one by the sitting president of the SFWA and one by the incoming president for Summer 2013, who are apparently each 12 yr. old nyah-nyah bullies. I’d hate to have a disagreement with them in a dark schoolyard.

Part 2, talking about a woman in a different dust-up:

One thing’s for sure: when people call you a troll, mentions screeds, attack grammar and composition, but don’t actually understand what’s been written let alone confront it, other than to give off childish insults cuz they have a vague idea it’s meant to put them in a bad light, that’s a home run. So I can’t write - so sue me. I’m not a clueless fucking racial and sexist bigot.

Part 3:

The reality is that in an era where institutional barriers have been removed to black folks, one is left only with idiots who don’t like certain ethnicities - on both sides. Describing indescribable mechanics wherein the effect of that institutional racism lingers for generations is a fool’s argument. Jews came out of death camps in Europe after a thousand years and more of on again off again pogroms, discrimination and an outright attempt at genocide. In only three years they created the state of Israel with the help of no one and against mountains of opposition.

Guys, this is gold. This is a mountain of absolute comedy gold.
