I know exactly why I think this is damn cool: Because it's DAMN COOL, and also before today I had never considered how to mass-produce spiral pasta. I learned both that I didn't know something AND I learned the something, both at once!
I feel like the big "Aha!" there is that you expect, if something's being mass-produced, for it to happen in a synchronized way. But here, each piece of pasta is being cut at a different time by a single swinging blade, and that is unintuitive even though it totally works.
The Mormon Space Whale Rape Story. "That Leviathan, Whom Thou Hast Made" by Eric Stone. Nominated for a Hugo, and nobody who read it could figure out why.
It's about sentient space whales, who rape each other and that's just how their culture and biology work, and the (human) Mormon missionaries trying to convert them to Mormonism.
User andrewducker referenced to your post from Interesting Links for 26-03-2014 (http://andrewducker.livejournal.com/3067003.html) saying: [...] ) Now I know how they make spiral pasta. And it's AWESOME. [...]
