Argh, livejournal, what the FUCK did you just do to my style and settings? My page looks good, my friends page looks fine, but any individual entry looks NOTHING like what it should!
There's a "switch back to old version" option if you find the "customise" option.
I submitted feedback - "poor colour choices, bad font choice, bad font size, who the fuck thought sans serif grey on off-white was a good colour choice" and switched back.
This is why I'm still using an unsupported S1 style, for the record: because OTHER PEOPLES AESTHETIC DECISIONS ARE HIDEOUS and I've never been able to make an S2 style not suck.
I switched back in haste; I wish I'd left feedback, as I'd have left exactly the feedback you described. That new layout isn't bad (just) for esthetic reasons but because it's nigh-on unusable.
-- Steve's wondering what the fuck sort of monitors these guys are using that render that shit into legibility.
I refuse to quit my S1 style because it is excellent in that images forty feet wide only affect the post with the forty foot wide image, all the other posts on the page remain the way the bloggers posted them (AKA not breaking my 'friends' page).
That was one of my goals too. But now that I mungled into an S2 style that isn't completely hideous a couple years ago, I'm scared to change it for fear of not being able to get my customizations back. Also I'm lazy.
ugh I'm tempted to but I see that "unsupported" tag and my cynical brain thinks "we're going to do shit that's going to make S1 completely nonviable until your crack"
To be fair, S1 has been unsupported for years. Doesn't mean they might not utterly break it soon, but I've had an S1 journal style since the beginning, and decided not to change because S2 didn't allow me to force text width display size.
I "switched" to S1 (I've been using an S1 theme for years and years, because it actually displays the way I want it to), but it hasn't changed the way the individual entry pages look (I refreshed, nothing happened.)
What did you do on the Customize page to get the entry pages to go back? And where/how did you submit feedback?
(Sorry, staring at this thing makes my eyes cross -- apparently, eight million people with visual impairment and migraines telling them that acres of whitespace and shitty font/color are a barrier to usage made no impression whatsoever.)
Never mind, fengi's comment below gave me the info.
My feedback to them:
As you may recall, a number of people with visual impairments and migraines informed you that the previous-new-style entry pages had too much white space and were difficult to read.
Now, there is even more white space, and the text is a sans-serif font in grey. This is not actually an improvement, and continues to make individual entry pages difficult to read.
In addition, hiding the "LJ feedback/switch back" box in an *unmarked empty area of the header bar* is an idiotic move -- the only reason I am able to submit this comment is because someone else submitted a report ticket and told us where to click.
This is not user-friendly design!!
Ugh. LJ, please stop trying to "improve" things, and listen to your customer base! :(
-- A (who realizes that it's a fruitless wish, given that I've been saying the same thing for many years now -- they don't care about their longterm paying customers.)
Apparently there's supposed to be an icon there to let you "temporarily, until the beta is complete" switch back to the previous style and the fact that it's empty is an error.
And: I got prompted to give feedback (and was shown a "switch back now!" button) when I went to customise my journal from the "customisation" options. You know, like "change your name" or "change your journal colours"
Alas, I am one of those people who play Minecraft. I would rather resent having to enable/disable Java all the time when it worked just fine before. I seem to be able to see comments now, but I have no idea why this should be. Still hate the new layout. It's awful.
While their names share the name of the bean, Java (for Minecraft) and Javascript (for webpage elements) are different. Disabling Javascript SHOULDN'T break web-Minecraft. THANKS NOTCH.
It's quite sterile and white. I can live with it, but it's annoying that I have to break my 'no-Javascript on LJ rule' to render the Profile page functional. I've resorted to enabling AdBlock there. 9_9 They've also increased the number of clicks it takes to get where I'm going on the Profile page ("interests"). Also, the "Post a new comment" radio button has the same text regardless if you are commenting on the original post, as I am here, or whether you are commenting on another reply. Thanks for the opt-out tip. I believe I'll implement that.
So I resorted to an all caps support ticket and got a prompt friendly reply. The answer is pretty awesome in terms of obtuse site design:
When viewing any system page that shows the standard blue header banner (such as the home page), there will be a link labeled 'Post in blog' near the right side of the banner, a blank space, and then an envelope icon. Click on that blank space between 'Post in blog' and the envelope icon'.
I tried this and it worked. Here is where you need to click:
That's hilarious! I'll add that you have to have Javascript enabled for the option to switch back to appear in a pop up menu, otherwise you get shunted directly to the Support Request form. So, to avoid JS nuttery on profile pages, I had to enable JS to find the 'switch'. 8^D
Sad note: this is only a "fix" in my view. It's cookie dependent, it does not switch the view back for people without an account, with cookies off, or for people who know where to find the invisible link to the 'switch'.
So thanks fengi! I'd never have found it otherwise.
