Pokemon uses the term "evolution" rather than "metamorphosis" to describe what Pokemon do, despite "metamorphosis" being by far the better word for it.

This is quite possibly because the Japanese word for evolution is 進化 (shinka; ‘evolution’ or ‘progress’), while the Japanese word for metamorphosis is 変態:‘hentai'.

So if they'd used "metamorphosis", a children's game would be saying things like "Congratulations! Bulbasaur has done the hentai into Ivysaur!"

As a huge Pokemon fan, I was ACTUALLY curious about this! Thanks for the "useless" fact!!

Fascinating! I've wondered about that for ages. Appropriate that the explanation uses Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, too.
