No, they probably don't (http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2014/06/02/why-have-female-hurricanes-killed-more-people-than-male-ones/).

ETA: Yeah, they really probably don't (http://wmbriggs.com/blog/?p=12653).

Oh wow, I hadn't seen that. Or their "links" list that's full of "scientific" racists, science deniers, and religious nutbars.

Holy crap, [livejournal.com profile] skington, you've cited an archetypical example of a racist, sexist, homophobic anti-fact dipshit, who demonstrably considers idiotic sources (Mencius Moldbug, John C Wright, Watts Up, on a 5-second pass) as worthy of every-page links.

Ed Yong, he's got points. And he links to counterarguments to his points. But Bill Briggs? To quote every New Yorker editorial cartoon ever, "Christ, what an asshole". And, more importantly, an idiot who doesn't care about figuring out facts before being an asshole in pursuit of his blinkered and terrible ideology.

My apologies - Ed Yong had linked to the guy previously which is why I mentioned him, but when I went looking for the post and found that Ed Yong had deleted the tweet in question I didn't put two and two together.

No worries. I just looked at that page and, uh, *wow*. He's got such a credibility problem that if he asserted that gravity exists, I'd check.

Just for reference, our most recent tropical storm (downgraded from a hurricane) Sandy was pretty damn devastating. Sandy is an androgynous name—although it's usually identified as female nowadays.

We should obviously switch to naming hurricanes after terrible, horrible things, like Hurricane Ebola and Hurricane Mullet.

You really know you're in trouble when Hurricane Stool Sample and Hurricane Hurricane meet on the map.

OK, that made me laugh so much I think I hurt something.

Can we just name them all 'Hurricane Hurricane'?
