Banana flower (http://insideinsides.blogspot.fr/2013/10/banana-flower.html). Which is why you get that nifty spiralling effect at the centre.

From the amazingly awesome Inside Insides (http://insideinsides.blogspot.com/) blog, which has many many more animations like this. Here's actual bananas (http://insideinsides.blogspot.fr/2010/07/bananas.html).

(Also, everytime these sort of images are posted on certain popular content aggregators, someone in the comments will bitch about how they've got enough free time to MRI scan vegetables, but this one person has to wait three months for an appointment).

Ah, thank you. I was going to say it had way too many layers to be a banana.

I don't think it's the flower, but the main stem of a banana plant.

Could be - I was going by what the original page says.
The sagittal view gives a pretty nice idea of what it looks like in the other cross-section. If you can't see the page, here's a (rotated, colour inverted) frame from that gif:

I would say it's a flower, but I may be wrong.

I hadn't seen that. I take it back - it looks like an inflorescence to me.

And what a beautiful image! :)

And then you see which voxels light up when you get it to think of a chimpanzee?

Must have been a temporary glitch, it's up for me right now?

Odd, still gives me the error for the gif, /files/, and the root directory (assuming there's anything there).

I checked the first several pages of your journal for more lordofweasels-sourced images, but only saw ones from your fartobucket.

I only use the domain for hosting huge .gifs. (and a ton of other things but the *web* part is just for huge animated files.)
