I did actually figure out who he is, I think. The guy isn't actually an academic as I would define the term (that is, he's not a professor of any sort), though he's held some short-term academic posts, and (like most poets) he appears to be quite short of money, which helps to explain, though it certainly does not excuse, his irascibility. I do feel a little sorry for him (ONLY A LITTLE), as the freelance market is undoubtedly a nasty place at the moment, and even if he'd done everything totally professionally he might well still be in a bad way. But I'm rather glad he's not some tenured guy out there high-hatting it over a bunch of students, which is what it sounded like at first.
