When you do, GET INSURANCE. Seriously, don't even think about not getting insurance.

Will do! I really don't want surprise vet bills!

I'm mixed on pet insurance.

I've had many pets, and on EXACTLY ONE the medical bills cost more than insurance to cover the bills would have. On every other pet in my entire life, the insurance would have cost way more than it would have covered.

I wish I'd had insurance on that one pet, because I ate those medical bills and it hurt (but I could afford it)... but I can't really recommend "always get insurance" as a plan because that's the only animal that ever needed it. And the price of that animal was *STILL* lower than "insurance for all animals forever" would have been.

Yeah, my issue with vet bills is that they can be incredibly variable, and I don't want to suddenly end up with a bill for thousands (even if that is really unlikely).

It is really unlikely and I sincerely hope it never happens, but the world is fraught with peril and uncertainty, and full of idiots besides. Of our four, two have needed it, and it's only by luck and the fact that he was wearing a headcollar for the hook to get stuck in that Taji didn't swallow that lovely fish head that some utter git left by the side of a popular dog walk with a three-pronged hook still stuck in it; then it would have been three.

Yes, and that's true for most of the animals who have it; it has to be or the business model wouldn't be viable. If you need it it's invaluable. Being in the situation where yes you could fix it but you can't because money is not a situation I'd wish on anybody. And if you don't need it, you're paying into the system that allows animals who do-- like Berkeley-- to have the care they need. For which, thank you.
