You can brick an iPhone by setting its date to the Epoch and rebooting it.

Surprisingly few people have done that, then.

A surprising number of people *have* done it - because the people who found the bug put out a fake Apple press release touting an Easter Egg if you did it.

Same as the "The Nexus has been able to do wireless charging for years, so we've FINALLY added this feature and made it better: just give your iPhone 30 seconds in any microwave, on High, for a full charge!" and "The iPhone 5S is now WATERPROOF! Take it swimming and see!" fake ads: There were a couple of people who did it.

(This particular one, a couple of people did it to prove that that was false and couldn't happen.)
