Even several years ago, I knew the "100-mile diet" was pretty impossible to do. I had a woman baiting me online, asking me why I wasn't sourcing all my food from within 100 miles.
"Because I don't have a backyard to raise a cow!" I replied, even though at the time I was already a vegan. I still believe eating lower on the food chain—food pyramid, what have you—is a better and more doable idea.
Appropriately sourced would be more honest, though most restaurant owners will tell you whatever they think you want to hear to sell you their food. If I tried to eat local all year here in Michigan I'd be a sad puppy around now, root veggies and asparagus get boring fast. Luckily we have a large dairy industry, I'm sure some states have few dairies.
