They also can't tell the difference between those two things and a small movie theater in upstate New York—even after the theater itself points it out (I can get a link but it's a Facebook post).

(Actually, how do you tell? If I do a twitter search for @hamiltontheatre I get far fewer tweets than the article was suggesting. Have the numskulls deleted their tweets, or is twitter search rubbish? I appreciate that both could be true.)
A little of both. Several of the harassing tweets linked *in the article* are already gone, for example. As well, twitter search defaults to "top" settings, which is a mix of the most popular matching tweets and tweets associated with people you follow. The "live" tab shows something closer to actual chronological tweets.
(Also, if you use twitter at all, I've been suggesting for years that everyone should block lots and lots of accounts in an automated way, and use an adblock rule so the people you block do not show up in mentions and search results. Now that being known as THE harassment tool and THE preferred environment for literal nazis has started to harm their bottom line, Twitter has started implementing some of these features natively - so if you've got a few hundred thousand racist misogynist asshole accounts blocked the way I do, your "search" results tend to come back pretty clean, if a little empty.)
They're apparently smart enough to fool 12% of Americans, even given The Crazification Factor of Americans actively and enthusiastically devoted to being The Worst Most Awful People, Deliberately.
