No, John.

American government budgets $37 million of a $280-plus billion dollar road improvement initiative to make it easier for -ten thousand people a day- to get to where they work.

Your headlines are funny, but misleading, and while I'm with you on most of the things you post... I actually kind of like to see taxpayer money spent improving the lives of taxpayers, in this one case.

Why on earth should the government foot the complete bill for a road that leads only to a single resident? That single resident can damn well pay for their own roads.

The government does pay for roads in a lot of cases. When a developer is building an area, however, he plans and builds the roads himself - and this is specifically a repugnant use of the funds because of Wal-Mart's history of "outsourcing" costs to the government and community whenever possible. It's also worth noting that this is a FEDERAL budget item paying for a CITY road - not a standard practice, at all.

In the end, this is an exceptional and remarkable way of disbursing of funds. Since it solely benefits a company who, rather than pay a living wage, make a point of helping their employees fill out food stamp and welfare applications, I'm entirely skeptical that it's anything other than another purchased law.

Well, to take an example from where I live, there's at least one example of a government-funded road to a single resident. The last kilometre-and-a-half of the airport road.

But in this case it's not just a single resident (try looking it up on Multimap), it's a major improvement to local infrastructure.

Do you want local business to cause major traffic jams all the time?

Your local airport is a commercial enterprise?!

That is *exceedingly* rare.

I don't see where you're getting at here. 'Commercial enterprise' is defined as:

the activity of providing goods and services involving financial and commercial and industrial aspects

which is exactly what my local airport does, in competition with other airports and other 'servants' of transportation. They bring in money to their owners in doing it.

You should have heard the bawling from Stavanger when we got our runway extended...
