Hey! Look! New Pope!

CNN doesn't seem to mention that Ratzinger was a member of the Nazi children's corps, a Hitler Youth, an anti-aircraft gunner in the second world war, and a concentration camp guard.

Funny, that.

Is it just me, or does he have an "Evil Villain" name? Like, couldn't you see him as "Colonel Ratzinger", evil antagonist to our hero?

You can do that with just about any German.

Um, dude, you're starting to sound like my insane grandfather.

I've known plenty of nice germans.

I know lots of really nice Germans.

That doesn't chang the fact that "Helmut" is the most awesome name for an evil overlord *ever*. It's the same reason that tender German love songs get played over here as angry death metal.

I don't think Rammstein ever produced a tender love song. "lust" songs, perhaps...

I wasn't talking Rammstein.

Have you got sources for that? Or would a quick trip to Google unearth all of that?

I don't doubt you -- just would like to read more.

A quick Google for Ratzinger and Hitler produced the following:

Attendence in the Hitler Youth was apparently compulsory, and he claims to have never fired a shot as a gunner, but it really isn't good PR.

He mostly claimed he joined when it was compulsory. Other people from his hometown who lived through the war said that isn't true, others corroborate his story.

Jeebus. Thanks much, though. I'll investigate more, post-final.

There seems to be much contention on his career as a Nazi. Seems like he did flee at age 17, then joined the church after being released from a de-Nazification camp or something.
