On Colorado City, AZ:

Anyone born into the community has no rights and no identity - all they have is the church. Children grow up believing society is evil, and they will bleed to death if they tell anyone about the misuse, which is why only very few dare to escape. "You don't have choices, you are told who to marry," Laurene Jessop said. "We are here in Arizona, we are here in America, but we are locked up."

Getting married between ages 14 and 16 is no surprise, and the youngest girl to be married was 8 years old, Flora Jessop said. Women in Colorado City are not allowed to laugh, they cannot cut their hair, and they have to wear a dress at all times with full-body underwear. They are told their bodies are disgusting and they are not allowed to touch them, Laurene Jessop said, and many women have genital infections because they only wash their hair.

Laurene Jessop said she signed the custody of her children to her husband when she was put on drugs in the institution, but she now has her children back with the help of the organization Justice for Children and Flora Jessop.

The children have a hard time adapting to society, Laurene Jessop said, because they do not know the words "I," "me" or "fun" and do not believe their mother, because she is "the wicked one," who ran away.

The link, she shrinks. Shrinky shrinky link.

I've talked about fundamentalist Mormons before.

An article on the education system in that city - or, rather, the LACK of an education system, as education is eeeeevil and hence state money for education *should* be used to fund the temple instead. It's also got a pile of details on what these idiots do to their children.
As incredible as this may seem to the uninitiated, the FLDS faithful believe a man must have at least three wives to ascend to the highest levels of the "celestial kingdom" in the afterlife, where he and his harem will rule for eternity over a multitude of planets that will be populated by their progeny.

FLDS women go along with this arrangement because they believe their eternal salvation depends on being married to a man worthy of reaching the celestial kingdom. (They also have little schooling, which I will discuss below, and almost no contact with the outside world.)

But a man can't simply find three willing females to agree to such an arrangement. The polygamous unions can only be performed by the FLDS prophet. Over the last 70 years, thousands of young women and underage girls have been sealed into polygamous unions by various FLDS prophets.

The FLDS prophet is considered by adherents to be God's only true spokesman on Earth. Strict obedience to the prophet is essential to remaining in good standing in the church. Thus, if a man wants to obtain the coveted three wives, he'd better do exactly what the prophet wants.
Regime change was needed in *IRAQ*, with all this Funded Amentalism at home?

You know, it's really sad, and kind of scary, when your brand of fundamentalism makes your everyday run of the mill christian fundie asshole look like a rational and reasonable human being.

>>Regime change was needed in *IRAQ*, with all this Funded Amentalism at home?<<

Honestly, Iraq wasn't really fundimenatlist under Sadam. It was totalitarian, but that's not the same thing.

I wasn't saying Iraq was fundamentalist. I was saying that there are people in dire need of help, here, and the people in charge *are* a threat to Americans and *are* committing criminal, terrorist acts against American citizens, unlike Saddam Hussein.
(Fact: Iraqi women now have fewer rights in Iraq than they did before the war)

Yeah, I'm not arguing with any of that.

I'm not a fan of the LDS, but I've got friends who are members. And so I try to cut their church some slack. But these whack job off-shoots make me shudder. The local Mormons have a HUGE amount of political clout (as anyone who's seen some of the whack-job laws the LDS gets passed in Mesa, Glendale and Scottsdale can attest) and should be using it to bring the hammer down on these people.

Every other bit of Arizona insanity just pales to the sheer EVIL that goes down up near the Az/Utah border...
