If you go back a few strips, they're complaining about these strange "hexes" instead of the standard squares.

Which are, in fact, explicitly something that you're supposed to use with D&D. The really funny part, though, is the bit about "Oh, he won't land until next round".

that's a good question. i guess the joke is that the comic drawings are stand-ins for the typical miniatures. it wouldn't be the first 'we're comics' sketch in the strip. earlier, the dwarf was in awe of the bard's ability to put pictures over their heads while singing.
