The USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa, has confirmed that an animal suspected of mad cow disease in the United States has tested negative.

"The inconclusive screening test sample reported on June 25 tested negative for BSE upon confirmatory testing," said Dr. David Cliffhanger, the deputy administrator for the animal and plant health inspection service.

Reached for comment, the cow who had been tested indicated it was something of a "good news-bad news" situation.

"The good news is that I received a clean bill of health, and don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy about that, but the bad news is that I was electrocuted with a rod placed up my anus, strung up above the floor of a beef rendering plant, had my throat slit, then I was bled white, gutted and cut into a bunch of little pieces as part of a massive industry food processing operation that sees millions of my brothers and sisters butchered each year. That’s really not something you ever recover from."

Asked for comment, a spokesperson for the beef industry indicated that the cow had nothing to complain about since it had received free health care even after being killed.

"Those mad cow tests aren’t cheap, you know."
