Thought #1: Remember how Episode I had the worst dialogue ever, until Episode II, which had the worst dialog ever?

Yeah. Why break a winning streak?
Obi-wan can make "You were the chosen one!" turn out cool. Captain Barbosa can say "Arrr!" without it being corny. Anakin and Padme can't. This is, indeed, the worst of all possible movies if you like dialog.

Thought #2: Man, the opening space battle sucks ass. There is no tension at all, and the only attempts to build it are with Hayden Christensen's command of subtleties of emotion and dialog.

Thought #3: Building tension using Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen DOES NOT WORK! Stop it! STOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOP!

Thought #3: The rest of the movie, from Mace Windu's death until Tarkin's first appearance, is extremely cool, except for the dialog. Definitely worth watching.

There was definitely some weak dialogue, but I thought it was noticably less painful than Episode II. I completely agree with you on the opening battle, though. It felt like we had these two ships that were in no way connected with the battle that was supposedly raging around them. And those droids climbing on their ships were lame - why oh why didn't the Jedi just force-push them off?
