Enter The Cow-Orker

20th August, 2002.

I went to a training course this morning, during which we were told a very amusing story about an experiment where four monkeys were locked in a cage containing a ladder. Every time one of the monkeys climbed the ladder, the cage was sprayed with cold water. Monkeys apparently don't like cold water, and it wasn't long before any monkey that touched the ladder was soundly beaten by his colleagues. Soon no monkey was game to risk The Ladder.

One of the monkeys was cycled out of the cage, and a new one brought it. It's first instinct, naturally enough, was to play on The Ladder. Before it could do so, its fellow inmates pounced on it and beat it up before it could trigger the spray of cold water. A second monkey was replaced. It also headed for The Ladder with the intention of playing, and was also soundly beaten (the first new monkey apparently leading the charge). And so on until none of the original monkeys who knew the significance of The Ladder remained. Any subsequent monkey introduced into the cage was set upon by the rest if it dared to approach The Ladder because that was how things had always been done.

All of which leads me to wonder whether I can procure four monkeys for the office from some place and spray them with cold water every time the Cow-orker begins to speak. Ideally, by the end of the day she would be set upon by a gang of damp and desperate monkeys any time she opened her mouth. Even if this fails to stop her talking, it would still be good for a few laughs, which can only be a good thing.
