Step 1: Have your pet rabid extremists attack Gonzales as "Not extreme enough".
Step 2: Defend Gonzales as "a great friend." Lie about Gonzales' lack of ideological purity.
Step 3: Nominate Gonzales as a "moderate" because of the pre-arranged complaints in Step 1 - after all, if the Taliban hate him, he MUST be reasonable, right?
Step 4: Since you've conditioned Americans to believe that the middle position between extremes is the correct ones, and just moved your own pet extreme so far out that the "middle" is now your exact position, profit.
