Why do we need to protect ourselves when we've got the police to beat us into submission?

Technically, Fresno isn't LA - in fact it is quite a bit north of it (over 200 miles). But I agree that this was overly done to an extent. The family of the boy hit with the rock should be reimbursed for all medical costs but to arrest and detain the girl?

Whoops, my bad.

This strange concept of "medical costs" for necessary services still throws me. I hadn't even considered that there might be any cost other than some scarring and a headache.

How do you *live*? Oh, wait, I remember, by repeating the phrase "I can't afford to get sick. I can't afford to get sick" and praying you dont' break a leg.

Unfortunately, not everyone has health insurance - and California is full of non-insured people (due to various reasons I won't get into). I, myself, had a recent bout of uninsured time as I was unemployed for nearly 2 years before landing a new job. Although I didn't go around with the mantra and prayers, I did stop participating in some of my more 'risky' activities (sword classes, rock climbing, alligator castrations, etc.)

First, a wound to the head will bleed ALOT and, as such, might prompt a visit to the ER. Once there, depending upon the amount of damage, anything from stitches to even staples might be needed (granted it was an 11 y/o girl throwing a rock, but you never know what type of rock (jagged) and so on). Not to mention possibly having to update tetanus shots, etc. Even insured, this could still run a couple hundred dollars.

As this incident only too clearly illustrates - we no longer live in a time where people 'suck it up' and work through difficulties on their own. It is now a world that needs to bend to every individuals desires and, if it doesn't do exactly what I want from my sofa, it is a crime!

... a couple of hundred dollars out of pocket, WITH insurance.

For a scalp wound.

I happen to have my medical documents in front of me, so let me step through this. Note, I might be takin' some liberties here and this is 'top of the line' health insurance. some of the 'cheaper' stuff can be anywhere from 50-100% more expensive.

Emergency Room Visit - $50 (unless admitted but that wouldn't happen)
Antibiotics - $10 co-pay
Pain meds - $10 co-pay (assuming something stronger than asprin)
If stitches - $10 followup doctor visit

So, I guess it was only $80 under my plan. However, Blue Cross PPO IN-Network would charge you 20% of the Emergency Room bill - and ER visits are usually not cheap. And if it was out of the Blue Cross network, that cost would be double.

Sometimes you have no choice in what medical plan is offered (when I started as a temp here, I HAD to use a specific insurance carrier - even if I was willing to pay for another one.)

Oh. My. Lord.

This is....
...no, I don't have the words.

I have certain violent impulses towards certain policemen and judges, however.

Where are they ever? I, and many of my friends, went throught shit like this every day at school for years, and none of the "supervising adults" seemed inclined to intervene.
