Sony patents technology to make game discs unplayable on any console except the first one that they are originally inserted into.

No trading. No lending. No renting. If your console dies, you need to buy all your games over again.

They haven't explicitly said this will be on the PS3, yet, but it's Sony. They produce music discs with rootkits.

The actual patent.

I really can't imagine they'd do that with the PS3, given that for the PS2 at least, backward compatibility was a big deal with it, and I believe the PS3 is doing the same. And given that the rental industry is so big. And given how unreliable frankly their consoles are in general, and how often they die.

If they would be stupid enough to try it, I see it getting shot down reaaal fast.

But we'll have to wait and see.

I can't imagine that ought to not be illegal.

It seems like Sony is conducting some sort of surreal, Orwellian experiment in which they keep fucking over their customers until they find the point where it's no longer profitable. Bizarre.

And this is why the xbox360 has more chance of showing up in my home than the PS3. It may be microsoft, but at least they screw you with lube.

I think that's why I'll stick with the Revolution.
