[livejournal.com profile] kjn says a train actually went over this, successfully, before they realised the road was gone. The link's in Swedish, though.

EDIT: K-J has corrected me. The train was going over *as it was being washed out*, and the passengers say it happening. His Scandahoovian-fu is stronger than mine.

Yeah, I figured by the time the engineer realized what he/she was/was not seeing, it would be too late to stop the train.

I had also figured that it was caught before any traffic had gone through until I read your text.

http://systransoft.com can do a decent translation of that page.

The article says that the ground collapsed as the train was going over. There may have been a small breach that collapsed further when the train went over it. The wobly rails caused a wagon to mistrack and the train was stopped 300 meters further.

Wow. Had the train been a little later that would've been a disaster, I think.

Huge devastation
The devastation that met the rescue personnel each huge.
The rail hang as a thread over the abyss. The only as remainder of E14 not many metres from there each vägräcket that stupid put highly over the the brown water masses. Of road banana was visible only some asphalt chunk down in the strömmande the water. The was the clean hazard that no cars drove up when the road disappeared.
Latter information pointed on that at least parts of the embankment probably still held together when the train passed.
"I do not believe the train willed coped with this only through balancing on the rail. How as entire pcs is the entirely fantastic", says rescue leader Anders Gustafsson.
According to the rescue service existed a 60-tal passengers in the procession. the had änglavakt. No was damaged seriously. But many each a lot of islet row off the fear experience.

Students on board
17 passengers each exchange students from Europe and USA on language camps in Sweden. During the weekend each the free and easy from lektionerna and had traveled to Norway. Yesterday each the on road back to the adult education college outside Östersund. On the school, their nervous buddies sat and waited. First o'clock an at night each students back.
"The feels good but is hugely tired. The can one of course understand, the is in a new country, cannot the language so good and so hands this", says course conductor Johan Brånäs.
The students and the other passengers were pursued to Åre Hälsocentral. There was examined the off doctors and might strike a kristeam during almost two hours.
"People are shaken but a lot of grateful and fond. The understands how poorly the could gone", says manager senior physician Alf Lerner.
Swedish National Rail Administration have not counted with that a considerable summer rain willed can to cause a catastrophy of this intimidating scope.
"I could not dream about these effects. The must have been fantastic forces in business. All our security margins became as gone with the wind", says Tony Lövgren on Swedish National Rail Administration.

Trafikkaos threatens
Now threatens totally traffic confusion on E14. National Road Administration fights against o'clock in order to an upright temporary bridge before the traffic average Sweden and Norway comes igång after the weekend.
"that an Europaväg is toiled broken on this way has I never consulted to be spoken about", says Lennart Helsing wide National Road Administration.
"the exists no other good roads däromkring and we must have igång the traffic. When the water lugnar down itself comes we to try to put on weight a temporary bridge over Kvarnbäcken during the Monday", says Lennart Helsing.
But the road probably will be suspended in a pair weeks.

"They had trip from hell"
The train driver did not have time to to do anything - 60 passengers a hair from death.
The embankment disappeared as the train was driven over. The 60 passengers were only seconds from death.
"They had a trip from hell", says rescue leader Anders Gustafsson.

Today a 30 metre wide ravine is all that's left of where the E14 road crosses Kvarnbäcken some 10 km from Åre.
A short distance away, the railway hangs as a limp skeleton over the rapids.
"You're dumbstruck when you see these pictures. This is incredibly serious", says Tony Lövgren on Swedish National Rail Administration.
The Nabotåget (local train) from Trondheim to Åre came to the bridge over Kvarnbäcken 19.45. The train driver didn't know that the bridge was about to collapse.

Violent deluge
A violent deluge had eroded the embankment and opened a ten metres deep gaping hole under the rail.
When the train driver realized the life-threatening situation it was too late to stay. The train dashed over the hole, expanding it as it passed. The pressure from the cars caused even more of the embankment to collapse into Kvarnbäcken.
During a few fearfilled seconds, the train drove on a track over empty air.
The welded rail wobbled of the weight, but held together. The astonished passengers barely had time to take in what the saw.
When the train came over on other side of the chasm, the front wheels mistracked, causing the train to jump and derail. After 300 metres, the train stopped.
Niklas Holmedahl, first on-the-spot of the rescue crew, spoke with the driver:
"The train drove over empty air for 30 metres over the rapids. They had a trip from hell", he says.
