Actually, now that I think about it, this may be another case of the Randy Rhodes Effect.

To wit, Zakk Wylde says he's unworthy to be a pimple on Randy Rhodes' ass, but Zakk Wylde makes much better music than Randy Rhodes ever did. I think it's because they figured out how to make music that doesn't suck in between Rhodes' death and Wylde's hiring.

Oh come on, Both Voivod and Katorz are great albums and there's nothing wrong with Newsted's bass there.

Oh wait, you mean Metallica? Yes, he allegedly played bass there, but he's gone from the mix so it's difficult to comment.
