In
lj_biz, a question is asked: Why are pro-anorexia communities tolerated?
coffeechica, who is one of the people running Livejournal, manages to clearly demonstrate that she has no idea what "pro-anorexia" means, and then flip-flop repeatedly on why some of the TOS are more equal than others. It's a train wreck.

That makes her clueless by definition. If she wasn't, she'd have a different job.

Date: 2007-08-08 04:32 pm (UTC)USERS: So are a lot of things on LJ!
LJ: Nothing promoting illegal or damaging behavior, thanks.
USERS: WTF??? You allow Pro-Anorexia groups on here!
LJ: Yes, because without those groups, Anorexics will have nowhere to go for support.*
USERS: [Descend into howler monkey wrath]
LJ: Look, there's nothing wrong with girls who want to be thin.*
USERS: [Continue to howl and gibber, fling feces, don't seem to understand that LJ can do any damn thing they want and that's that.]
*I really wish I was making that up.

Date: 2007-08-08 04:33 pm (UTC)However, the summary is this:
LJ bans fanficcers for making kiddy porn fic (good, that shit is both shit and illegal)
LJ bans fanficcers for making *adult* porn fic that involves no children at all (mixed: It's still shit, but it's legal shit)
LJ explains these bans as TOS violations.
User points out that TOS includes rules against self-harm and self-destructive behaviour, and advocacy of same. Points out pro-anorexia communities.
LJ responds, alternately, with "those are support groups, they help the victims", "banning the groups won't fix the problem", "has anyone reported them to Abuse?" and "they do more good than harm, so they can stay".
Demonstrating, in order, cluelessness, cluelessness, cluelessness, and cluelessness.

It's like the time I learned why you don't mix ammonia and bleach.
Date: 2007-08-08 05:45 pm (UTC)Going to get my ducks in a row within the next couple of weeks and just make mine a frivolity journal.
Since they take their permaban people and cancel all accounts by email address (communities, etc) from what I saw from Ponderosa and others ... I'll have to do something about that. Sigh.
This person makes the case that all fanfic (http://ansuz.sooke.bc.ca/lawpoli/free-expression/tsol.php?r=na) is illegal and it's interesting, if based on a flawed premise, but most of this situation is based on premises with flaws.
In case you don't want to read all the way down to page 36 for my comment/performance art ...

It's actually a good thing that Brad is leaving. Then after a few more weeks of frothing, he can come back in and "save it" with a decent response. Or they can find a vocal "hater" and hire him/her to wander in and fix it better. If they care.
Hey, have you seen this post?

Aside from LJ/6a asshattery, social networks have/are evolving, thanks in no small part to Brad. But that's a discussion for my off hours another day.
