#1: Yes, fervent belief in things for which there is no evidence is, in fact, generally considered a sign of insanity. Why should popularity of delusion matter?

#2: He pled not guilty by reason of insanity, originally. *He* was the one who originally said he was crazy. The fact that he changed his mind after everyone agreed with him is not the point.

Well, maybe he's not so much denying that he's crazy as trying for a procedural loophole. The obvious way out is for the judge &c to be crazy too, so the court with appropriate jurisdiction is obviously in Florida.
