A little boy who plays dead is totally not a suitable host for the future-moose. They'd eat him out and then run out of food before getting enough mass to fully form their wings, and then where would they be?

I'm surprised you didn't know this about the young ones - the adults actually want them to run out of food so that their first moments make them pissed and hungry. They don't want little gluttons resting on their laurels, they want angry starving beasts smashing through the woods looking for more malls and Canadian lumberjacks to lay waste to.
