In California, highway cops will be pulling over perfectly law-abiding motorists to give them Starbucks gift cards. No, really.

And in New York City, cops are leaving wallets and purses around, watching to see who picks them up, and arresting anyone who doesn't immediately hand them over to the nearest cop.

It's worth noting, here, that the law doesn't require that you give things to the nearest cop, and allows 10 days to turn found property in. As well, they've recently started sticking fake credit cards into the wallets because that way, they get you on Grand Larceny instead of petty theft.

It is my opinion that there is probably enough crime in New York City that the cops don't really need to be helping entrap new ones. Not to mention, it's been ruled unconstitutional and stuff.

And there is a push for getting entrapment into a permitted police procedure here in Sweden...

I have to say that if I found a purse or backpack in a Macy's or on a subway, I would be far more likely to take it to the lost and found, rather than give it to a cop.

Or else, I'd check to see if there was ID inside and try to get their phone number, so I can be sure they'd get it back.

Which in fact I've done, twice. So next time I get arrested?

You know, if I lived in NYC, and was aware of this? I'd look for them and call the FBI every time I saw one. I'd love to see which bureaucracy wins that particular pissing contest.

Wow. I'd be in so much trouble, because when I find a wallet or purse that is lying randomly in the street and looks like it's the leftovers from being snatched, I look up the identifying info if it's there and either call the person or mail their stuff back to them.

This is where I'd link that story to the DoD planting fake IEDs in Iraq and then shooting anyone that goes to look at them (assuming I could find the damn story), and say that New York is way behind the curve.

I'm glad that stupid assed highway patrol thing seems to only be happening in Sacramento - I would be fucking PISSED if a cop pulled me over to give me a gift card to Starbucks, and I go to Starbucks almost every day.

Sorry to litter the comment board with un-linkable heresay, but my girlfriend works in a gas station outside Jacksonville. In said gas station, two employees have been fired and arrested after selling alcohol to 16 year olds.

The problem? Oh, nothing much. Just the ATF using hard-core Hollywood style makeup to make the kids look older. Like, significantly older. Also, giving them fake IDs. You know, like everyone knows how to tell a fake ID from a real one, right?
