New Nine Inch Nails album available.

First 9 tracks = free download.
Entire double-album download: $5
Entire album on 2 CDs with pamphlet and all that other physical stuff: $10
Deluxe edition with both CDs, hardcover casing, Data DVD of all the original music in various formats, Blu-Ray disc with maximum quality surround-sound: $75.
Ultra-mega-sooper-deluxe edition: $300, but all 2500 units are already sold out.

Oh, and all the music is released under the CC Sharealike license - meaning as long as you make no money doing so, share it around and remix it all you want.

In case you missed my point: With free downloads available, and with the full download for $5, and with a license that *encourages* people to copy and share it, they still made $750,000 on the most expensive edition alone.

Right now Bono is sobbing and shaking his fist at the appeasers of content pirates.

Making your money from selling collectible editions is only a workable model when you're already famous. I'm more curious as to whether they'll make enough to cover costs from sale of the cheapo versions alone.

At rather inflated costs, it'd run about $100,000 to record the album. (I am not speaking to typesetting, art, and the like; I realize this.)

If they were only selling the $10 CDs, they'd need 10,000 people to buy.

Since they've got at least a quarter that many people who are willing to pay $300 each, I'm guessing they'll meet costs.

They're still making more than the record companies would give them.

I bought the album download yesterday on principle alone. While the bits I have heard didn't wow me, still worth it. Good job NIN.

AND it's actually GOOD. Could not STAND the last 2 albums, but I've been listening to this non-stop since Monday. Ordered the $75 version and already planning on how I'm going to fuck with things...
