Agreed. I was hoping for sympathetic pregnancy or a surgically implanted womb, but I got transgendered.

Call me crazy, but it just doesn't make me uncomfortable. I mean, seeing a pregnant man is weird, but once I knew the situation, my only real questions were biological (like, if he had the whole surgery and has a penis, how did the period work? Did he bleed from the dick? that's fucked up).

I wonder if I'm well adjusted, or if I'm the odd one for not caring about his gender.

i don't see a problem with this either. maybe we are just becoming more tolerant with the generations.. the doctors were prolly oldschool. that's why i was disappointed this wasn't a REAL man giving birth, lol. but you gotta think about it this way, i guess, he FEELS as if he is a real man, that's why he is transgendered. If you think about it, a transgender feeling as though he is really a man, and is just taking advantage of the fact that he used to have some woman parts that happen to still work... i mean, i'm sure there are many men that would find it amazing to be able to give birth. you don't have to be formally a woman to feel that way, i'd imagine. kinda like men who wish they could breastfeed.

"I thought it was really a man"
Perhaps you'd like to rephrase that? :S

"is a transgender"
try "is transgendered" or "is a trans man". It sounds dehumanizing to call him "a transgender" as though trans was a sex in itself, rather than an identifier. This is worsened by your use of "that" rather than "who".

I really am sorry for going all PC-police, and I'm sure you meant no offense, but language is a very tricky issue for transgendered people. It's hard to feel respected and understood when the language is working against you, you know? And how should folks outside the trans or queer communities know how to navigate the language unless well-meaning but hopelessly square grammarnistas such as myself point things out?

No, it's nothing like that.

You're conflating gender identity and sexual orientation.

Also, there are people who self-identify as gay (or straight) and sometimes desire to fuck a member of the non-preferred gender. I don't see why that's a problem or sigh-worthy.

It's sigh-worthy because of the double standard. A "straight" man has a single gay experience and he is pretty much labeled as a gay man in denial...yet a gay man can have sex with a member of the opposite sex and still be considered gay?

Either way it doesn't make much of a difference, but I had a feeling you'd bite:-)

Wait wait wait what--are you saying that wanting to have a kid is a female-only thing?

Or that bearing a kid is a female-only thing?

Does that mean that neither member of a couple who uses a surrogate mother is a woman?

If someone born biologically male *could* get pregnant, would you insist on calling them female or a woman?

And how do you feel about seahorses?

I think seahorses are adorable.

As for humans, wanting to have a child is something either gender can experience...as for actually being able to bear it? Unless I'm wrong, a few remnants of Biology floating around in my brain stated that a human (biological, as in born with the reproductive system needed to nurture and give birth to a fetus) female was solely capable of giving birth.

However, if I'm wrong...I am TOTALLY open to any alternative information.

Me either. Honestly, personally, I'm not much for the desire to have kids[1], and pregnancy is... uhm... pretty creepy. Having another organism that you can't get away from in constant contact with you for nine months?

But you know, people *do* want to get pregnant, and do want to have kids, and hey, more power to him for doing so.

[1] Although I got a mad motivation to do so after watching my father die, and let me tell you, discovering the "OMG I want to have kids so someone will have to take care of me when I'm old and sick" drive within yourself is pretty depressing.

It just makes me sad that in this day and age there are doctors out there who will refuse someone like this treatment. Regardless of what you think of it...he needs medical help and advice. And once there is an actual fetus involved...that child needs help no matter what you think of it's mother/father. Don't these people who object to trans identity and any form of what they consider sexual deviancy tend also to think that every blastocyst is sacred? I can see (though not agree with) them objecting to the IVF since some object to IVF regardless of the situation. But once he'd gotten pregnant...all bets are off. Oh no, two people who love each other deeply and are financially stable want to have a child...call the morality police. Sheesh.

Date: 2008-03-20 01:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] torrain.livejournal.com
To be fair, it's possible that at least some of the doctors were intellectually accepting but simply not comfortable and didn't trust themselves to handle the situation and give appropriate advice. At that point, it would've been irresponsible to not pass them on to another qualified professional who *could* cope, given that there was one available.

(I'm vaguely recalling some concept of the idea that a doctor isn't allowed to operate on their children if someone else is available, since the emotional involvement will screw with their judgement. While I'm not sure if such a restriction actually exists, I could see some of the doctors being in a similar situation here, where their emotional involvement--with the idea of gender, rather than with a particular individual--is such that they don't feel they can be involved.)

What's the problem? They want to have a baby, one of them is able to get pregnant, carry, and deliver the baby...sounds like perfectly fine reasons to have a baby. Screws up some people's little heads when they consider what defines "male"? It's probably good for them to be shaken up. I'm sorry this couple is encountering opposition, though.

Of course, by the time the baby is ready for pre-school, the community will have forgotten and moved on to some new perceived scandal.

Heck, if my (bio-male) husband could carry and deliver a baby, he'd do it in a red-hot second...and I would be totally behind it.
