American torturers destroying the evidence to keep from being prosecuted isn't new. Finding the written order to shred the evidence to avoid prosecution is.

Isn't "destruction of evidence" sort of illegal?

Not according to cannon law: those who have the cannons, make the laws.

The drawback to that comes when there are more angry peasants than cannonballs. An educated, pissed off populace tends to express its displeasure by lodging lawsuits and impeachments and so forth. An ignorant, pissed off populace tends to express its displeasure by hitting people and breaking things.

Ah but you are forgetting the dangerous power of Sofas - as in said populace needs to actually care enough to remove their buttocks from said sofas.

No, I'm just not overestimating it. When life sucks hard enough, it can even separate a couch potato from a couch.

I live in hope... sadly I cynically doubt it, I sadly feel that if they get their big macs and if their tv programmes aren't cancelled a depressing number of people won't care if you're murdering, torturing, shredding every right we've ever had etc. It depresses me no end.

But I live in hope that maybe something will stir the sofa bound masses. If not, maybe I should invest in a very large crow bar. Maybe we could leave a trail of doritos to the nearest government building and call the crowd that gathers a protest? It may work *opens windows to let the excess cynicism escape*

Average people may not care enough about torture to rock the boat. They absolutely do care when the government's foolish policies cause huge price spikes in fuel and food, when they can't get a job, don't have health care, and don't have any other safety net. They may not care about other people's civil rights being violated, but they sure do care when it takes all day to make a two-hour plane flight because of "security" nonsense. And it's the same policies that underlie all that mess.

Sadly, I have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] sparkindarkness: I find that that which does not interfere with bread and circuses Doritos and MTV does not often sufficiently piss off a sufficient percentage of the populace, educated or otherwise, to effect any major change.

Yes. However, "obstruction of justice" carries a MUCH smaller penalty than "crimes against humanity".

That's just contempt - they're not even bothering to do a proper cover up any more, so little do theyc are about being held accountable

...this level of ineptitude would be fucking hilarious if it was anything other than torture.
