The drawback to that comes when there are more angry peasants than cannonballs. An educated, pissed off populace tends to express its displeasure by lodging lawsuits and impeachments and so forth. An ignorant, pissed off populace tends to express its displeasure by hitting people and breaking things.
I live in hope... sadly I cynically doubt it, I sadly feel that if they get their big macs and if their tv programmes aren't cancelled a depressing number of people won't care if you're murdering, torturing, shredding every right we've ever had etc. It depresses me no end.
But I live in hope that maybe something will stir the sofa bound masses. If not, maybe I should invest in a very large crow bar. Maybe we could leave a trail of doritos to the nearest government building and call the crowd that gathers a protest? It may work *opens windows to let the excess cynicism escape*
Average people may not care enough about torture to rock the boat. They absolutely do care when the government's foolish policies cause huge price spikes in fuel and food, when they can't get a job, don't have health care, and don't have any other safety net. They may not care about other people's civil rights being violated, but they sure do care when it takes all day to make a two-hour plane flight because of "security" nonsense. And it's the same policies that underlie all that mess.
Sadly, I have to agree with sparkindarkness: I find that that which does not interfere with bread and circuses Doritos and MTV does not often sufficiently piss off a sufficient percentage of the populace, educated or otherwise, to effect any major change.
