An otherwise great shot, blown completely by the price sticker on the bottom right sole.

Agreed. However to get that pricetag off would be a very simple Photoshop, or even MS Paint modification.

and put some wear on the shoes, and rub some of the flashing off ...

Disagreed.

I think it makes the shot for reasons already pretty well explained by everyone else who liked that aspect.

No way. The price-tag-still-on totally makes that shot.

Why is it blown? She just bought the shoes to meet her husband. I think it adds to it.

Plus, the shoes would have been at least a hair worn, just subtly - she's never walked an inch in those shoes. Just out of the box even without the Payless sticker on there. The flash is still on the tips of her heels.

The photo is of an American waiting for her Navy husband to disembark.

They're probably Payless.

see, this is why context is everything

That makes both the total newness of the shoes and the Payless-recognizable sticker absolutely perfect, if not poignant.

Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but not the words you're thinking of if you're thinking "shore leave" instead of "martial homecoming"

Martial homecoming is exactly that. If he's a third class, this is probably their first deployment separation since they got married. She's been missing her husband for months, and wanted to look pretty for him. She probably hasn't worn high heels since he left, which is why she ran out to get some.

Not if she put them on right before she got out of the car. I wouldn't try to drive in those, would you? I'd drive in sandals and put the heels on when I got there.

You've never been to Norfolk, VA, have you?

I'd leave the sticker on, myself. It's adds a kind of sweet just-new-trying-hard poignancy to the shot, as opposed to just a pair of kinda vampy hot-pink heels.

If this was a staged shot, not a piece of reportage, yes.

But the shoes were bought for the occaision.

It has a lot of "male gaze" aspects, but more of that is the male gaze the subject is trying to please, than it is the male gaze of the photographer.

I did, but after this was already said; Please read my comment in toto, and context.

Had I not mentioned aspects of the photo (relating to the effect male gaze has) I probably would have deleted it, but since it wasn't just a comment about the context, I didn't.

Peeling off the sticker still leaves adhesive behind, and then you're going to pick up carpet fuzz, or human/pet hair, and that's kinda gross.

now that i know the context thing, the stickers on her shoes, and the heart tattoo scream "I've missed you so much and want to be a vision of hot-ness for when you see me" instead of "photography school assignment" or "tila tequila plots her next attack on society"
