Just in case you were one of the people who mistook Catholics for sane people.

That's right, crackers are murder. Saying "Corpus Christi, You Make Goooood Cookies" means that you really need to die.

Note where Faux Noose puts their emphasis - they include a note at the bottom telling you how you, too, can help to make this student's life difficult because you're also a clueless illiterate batshit cannibal-wannabe.

“However, if anything were to qualify as a hate crime, to us this seems like this might be it.”

I didn't know petty theft (and that's a longshot) could be a hate crime.

I mean, you have to have a crime first.

They invited him up and gave it to him. That's pretty much the *opposite* of theft.

petty theft I think goes right out the window when someone gives you something.

This is like you going home with a free cookie that the hari krishna gave you and not eating it. Once they give it to you, I'm pretty sure it's yours.

Hee. That reminds me of those calculations that if you put all the claimed shards of the True Cross together, you'd have enough wood for a good-sized grove. Not to mention that there seem to be enough pieces of the Shroud of Turin to stock a...well, shroud store, if there was such a thing.

Okay, aside from the fact that this is going to draw all the batshit-insane out of the woodwork, I've been meaning to ask: Why do you pay so much attention specifically to Florida and Ohio? It's not like a number of other states *cough*Alabama*cough* don't provide enough fuel for the fire.

It's not that I go looking for them. It's that Florida and Ohio pull out a *special* amount of *the really special* stupid.

Seriously. More EXTRA-crazy stuff comes out of those two states than every other state, province, or insignificant European nation combined.

Actually, in Catholicism, the Eucharist is Christ's actual flesh.

No panty-waist "symbolic cannibalism" for the "True Church".

I think my favourite part of the whole video is that the pastor is going these are awfull! Then continues to pop the wafers in his mouth like they are candy. If they are that bad why continue eating them?

So You Don't Have To™

Don't they sell Eucharist crackers in bulk at Catholic shops?

Indeed they do! (http://www.echurchdepot.com/index.php?cPath=500_689_692)

(I know, those don't have the priestly blessing thing on em...but still...holy shit, guys!)

The priestly blessing really is what makes the difference; it's just a wafer until that happens. Not that I'm agreeing with the Catholics on this, but that's what's sparking the outrage.

It's worth noting that historically, the Catholic church has had to worry about people palming the eucharist specifically for the purpose of comitting sacrilege with it, not just to 'prove a point'. At least one of the historical forms of Satanism, one of the inverted-Christianity ones (there are at least three distinct religions with that name, not as related to each other as one might guess) required theft of the eucharist for use in its rites. And since that version of Satanism was all about opposing everything the Church stands for and glorifying Christians' supernatural enemy, it's hard to imagine any of the churches that do the whole communion rite not getting pretty upset when an already blessed or transubstantiated wafer is misappropriated. Especially the Catholics.

Now this can turn into a rationlist-vs.-mystic or atheist-vs.-theist argument (or, given the envioronment, just a mocking session) regarding whether anyone in the XXIst C. should be getting that fired up over the possibility that someone else may be taking their most sacred substance in order to serve their deity's enemy -- just as we can make it all about whether belief in transubstantiation itself is inherently silly (disclosure: I personally do not think it is silly, though I do understand that it's mysticism, not rationalism; I personally am a Christian, though not Catholic) but I think it's important for one of the ways we look at this to be from an understanding of what it means to the participants, both religiously and historically.

Not the only way we should be looking at it, but one important one to bear in mind. As [livejournal.com profile] atlasimpure pointed out, to believers (in sects that perform that rite) -- and we can safely assume that the church in question has plenty of believers there, otherwise what would be the point of its being there? -- it's not just a cracker. While this cannot be entirely disconnected from the question of whether religious belief at all, or any specific set of beliefs, should be respected, derided, or ignored, "Why have they reacted the way they have?" is a question that has to be answered taking the religious context into account.

We *sometimes* get more serious discussions than the usual mocking session, but I do enjoy a good mocking session.

And, fundamentally, I don't care *why* you think the cracker is the literal living flesh of your God. I care only that *it's still a cracker*, and even the fervent believers admit that nothing has changed about it in any real[1] sense, and they're trying to claim it's a crime on the same level as said same believers beating Matthew Sheppard to death for being different.

I get *why* they're upset.

I still think they're stupid.

And because after the blessing the wafers become the body of Christ, and throwing the body of Christ would be very, very irreverent, the priests will consume all the crackers left over after communion. Yum...
