The Orange Box is $10 this weekend.

$10 for *Portal*, man, and then there are a bunch of other games that come with it, including, y'know, one Game Of The Year that's largely considered[1] one of the best FPS games ever, AND the two expansions that are better by far.

[1]: Not by me. The lousy HL2 engine hit detection annoys the hell out of me. But the fact that I don't consider it "best ever" doesn't make it bad!

It's times like this that make me regret switching to a laptop.

Most semi-modern laptops can handle HL2 and company on a reasonable-to-low detail setting.

Half-life 2 came out in 2004. Virtually all modern hardware can play it swimmingly well.

It'll make your lap a bit warm, though.

That is what God Belkin made laptop fan plates for.

Or, if you use your notebook on a table, get an aluminum defroster tray (as seen on TV tm) or one of those grooved aluminum CD display trays as seen in CD Warehouse and some other CD stores.

They're freeking amazing for conducting away and radiating laptop heat.

My laptop cheerfully handles anything the Source engine can throw at it, and the only modification I've made since getting it in 2005 is upgrading to 2GB of RAM. :D

My laptop has a terrible graphics chipset.

Ah, sorry.

"The Orange Box" is the Half-Life 2 collection that includes Portal. It's called that because it has a bright orange box.

It contains:
* Portal
* Half-Life 2
* All three HL2 expansions - the two actual games and the Lost Coast tech demo mini-game
* Team Fortress 2.

You get this particular deal on Steam. (http://www.steampowered.com/)

Is this to get you into Steam and start buying other regular-priced stuff there? Laying the foundation for the next expac?

Probably.

But, and here's an important thing, The Orange Box is two years old.

Most people who were going to buy it, bought it at full price, or at one of their previously-reduced prices.

This deal is to get $10 out of people who weren't going to buy it before. It's not like an extra Steam account and an extra Steam download *costs* them anything in real terms, so even if you never buy anything else on Steam ever again, this is a free $10 to Valve.

Yeah, I meant to mention something like that when I first started to reply, then I got distracted and forgot on my way back.
