The Orange Box is $10 this weekend.

$10 for *Portal*, man, and then there are a bunch of other games that come with it, including, y'know, one Game Of The Year that's largely considered[1] one of the best FPS games ever, AND the two expansions that are better by far.

[1]: Not by me. The lousy HL2 engine hit detection annoys the hell out of me. But the fact that I don't consider it "best ever" doesn't make it bad!

Most semi-modern laptops can handle HL2 and company on a reasonable-to-low detail setting.

Half-life 2 came out in 2004. Virtually all modern hardware can play it swimmingly well.

It'll make your lap a bit warm, though.

Or, if you use your notebook on a table, get an aluminum defroster tray (as seen on TV tm) or one of those grooved aluminum CD display trays as seen in CD Warehouse and some other CD stores.

They're freeking amazing for conducting away and radiating laptop heat.

My laptop cheerfully handles anything the Source engine can throw at it, and the only modification I've made since getting it in 2005 is upgrading to 2GB of RAM. :D
