The Wall almost made the list. Empire Records sucked, *real* biopics are generally unsuited, Tommy and Grosse Point Blank were not "rock and roll movies"
Heavy Metal comes closest, and the disjointed storytelling and lack of any real connection between the pieces mean it gets the "sex, drugs, and" but really loses out on the genuine Rock And Roll Movie Experience.
Our local film reviewer gave Blues Brothers 2000 a split review, which I don't think he's ever done for any other movie: Either one or five stars, depending on whether or not you're there for the music.
The line between jump blues, soul and rock is thin and blurry at best...and it is all technically 12 bar jazz. But I know we are all using the popular definition of rock. I just think that "The Commitments" holds up under repeated watching better than any of the others, even though I think "Spinal Tap" is a great film.
