Identify these coins!

I found some more stuff my Dear Former Homeowner left behind. In it were three coins - the first was a Swiss Franc, the second two, I can't identify. The writing on them looks Arabic, but I can't read 'em. Enough of the characters (and the plants around the rims of the coins) are the same that I bet they're from the same country.

So I took pictures!





Same two coins, front and back images. How about it, Interweb? What country are those from, and how many cents are they roughly worth?

Edit: They're both Iranian! The bigger is 10 Rials, from 1940. The smaller is 5 Rials, from 1933. They're worth approximately 0.15% of one Canadian cent.

The smaller one is 50 dinar coin from Iran. I imagine the larger is also, but will check.

I would guess both are Iranian, and the lion coin might be 50 years old.

Numbers on the coins: 1359 & 1352. I think that's in the Islamic date system, which started in about 622 CE... so, roughly 1981 & 1974.

The larger is a 10 rial coin from 1359, so, say, 1940CE?

The smaller is a 5 dinar coin from 1352, so approx. 1933.

G=H-(H/33)+622 and H=G-622+(G-622)/32

G=Gregorian year
H=Hijri year

Link for date conversion data. I had to look that up.

And there is no question about the denominations, though I can find links for you if you like.

I doubt you'll find that either is worth much more than pocket change, unfortunately.

If they're pocket change, it's more awesome. Because then you can electroplate them with copper or brass or gold or whatever shiny yellow metal you can electroplate with, and call them RPG props.

Pocket change? *much less* than pocket change.

But I was curious what they were worth, regardless - not so much as a "OMG BIG MONEY", but more "Hey, this is worth 16 cents!" kind of thing.

As it turns out, the two coins together are worth 15% of one cent - .0015 dollars.

It is sort of neat that combines they are still a smaller denomination than anything you could carry in American or Canadian currency. You do not even have the option of holding that much money in another way.

Their monetary value may be far less than their collectable value. Check with a local coin shop.
