Who is the oldest currently living rock star?

Define "Rock Star" as "someone primarily famous for their music", just to exclude guys like Christopher Lee, who got into making heavy metal in his 90s but everyone still knows as Dracula and Saruman.

Charlie Watts is 68 - can anyone find someone to beat that?

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] senorcameltoe brings Ringo at 69, [livejournal.com profile] nosrialleon has Ginger Baker at 70, and [livejournal.com profile] coyotegoth comes home having bagged Chuck Berry, 83.

BEAT THAT!

(And no, "Jack Daniels" is not a rock star.)

EDIT2: [livejournal.com profile] grimnir_thegrey brings in BB King (84) and Pinetop Perkins (*96*). And while I'm not 100% willing to call Blues "Rock", I am entirely 100% unwilling to NOT include it.

So our current winners are Chuck Berry and Pinetop Perkins.

BEAT THAT!

I'd say Pete Seeger, who's turning 91 in May, but he does folk.

Chamber music is DEFINITELY not rock.

Vera Lynn isn't exactly *rock*.

In fact, nothing that would fit on the Fallout 3 Soundtrack is rock.

Little Richard is 77, in case Chuck Berry drops dead tomorrow or something. And Jerry Lee Lewis is a spry 74.

And Jerry Lee Lewis is a spry 74.

And, I have it on good authority, that Jerry Lee Lewis is the devil.

And Jesus was an architect before his career as a prophet, but wouldn't Jerry Lee Lewis being the devil make him ancient and immortal, and therefore, the automatic winner?

I remember Alan Cross answering this question on his show... but he stipulates active artist.

"I find this fascinating: Who is the oldest active artist in alt-rock right now? Iggy Pop has been making records since the middle 60s. He’s 62.

David Bowie was born just a few months before Iggy, so he’s 62 as well. He started young, too. His first appearance on record was in June 1964. Lou Reed has been making records since 1957. He turned 67 this year.

Leonard Cohen? In some circles, he’s an alt-rock sort of dude. He’s 75. But all these guys have a long way to go before they can beat the all-time ancient record for a working musician.

A Grammy Award-winning blues singer named David "Honeyboy" Edwards is, from what anyone can tell, the oldest working musician in the universe. He was first recorded in 1952. He was born on June 28, 1915. He still plays gigs at the age of 94."

is active artist defined by recording, or playing? Chuck Berry still plays live concerts. I got to see him last October, very cool.

Given his reputation, perhaps one should be more specific on who "bagged" Chuck Berry. He has pictures.

Shouldn't any rock star who lived past 40 be disqualified for not rocking hard enough?
