Really? I genuinely did not know that. Looking it up, it looks like "speech-impaired" is preferred to mute, but I don't see any preferred term for "deaf". Is there one I'm missing?
The only mention in the article that anyone involved was "mute" is in the headline. Mute's a problematic term anyway, and particularly when applied to deaf/HoH people who sign exclusively - see this.
That google turns up plenty on why it's demeaning to assume that someone is mute simply because they're deaf, but nothing on why the term "deaf-mute" is offensive when applied to people who are both deaf and mute.
Avoiding the comment freeze, classy as ever. Couldn't let punching another fucking person in pain in the face go, could you. That's not what he meant by a good apology, you vicious worthless fuck.
I'm sorry for being prickly, and wanted to clarify to you personally that that comment was directed at the thread as a whole, not at you or any of the other participants. Making jokes is what I automatically do, and even though I'd skimmed the above post and knew you were intimately involved in it, I didn't think to realize that you had taken it so hard, as our weaselly friend has since hipped me to. It's no excuse, I just rub people the wrong way sometimes. I mean no ill, it's just how I cope.
And while I'm not deaf myself, I am fairly newly disabled (mentally AND physically, yay), and have experienced some sliver of what you've been through. I'm still learning myself how words or phrases that are 'normal' to most people can hurt us on the edges.
You know, I have long since stopped being surprised at peoples' ignorance, but this almost surprised me.
People in my elementary and junior high school class thought I was mentally handicapped, and I often got bullied and made fun of--my issue is completely different from deafness, and I don't consider myself disabled, per se, but I do have a lot of sympathy for people who have also had to deal with difficulties in a world that wasn't made for them.
