It may be possible to detect major earthquakes, up to several days in advance.


Two examples so far, Japan and Haiti. They're sticking sensors ALL OVER THE PLACE and waiting for the next one to see if they can see it coming.

Would be interesting to see some data of that sort for New Zealand. I know that our GNS would love to be throwing sensors all over the landscape if their budget allowed for it. Christchurch had Internet-connected geophones and data loggers deployed across the city in people's homes as soon as possible after the major quakes.

post hoc, ergo propter hoc. how often do we get ionosphere heating in places where we DON'T have earthquakes? the heating in the images above wanders by hundreds of miles, too
