Employee has heart attack at the office. Defibrillator is in locked room, only person with key is out of the building. CPR-trained employee told 'stop that, you might get us sued' by manager. Employee dies.

TimeWarner really has no possible thing they could say to justify the response, but STILL, their response in that article is just so cold and callous.

At this point, their representative is all in "Wait, WHAT? Let me find out what happened first and then I will get back to you, so I'm saying nothing for now" mode.

This is a PR nightmare so folks at T-W want to watch what they say... and on top of that I suspect that the representative genuinely doesn't know a lot of detail about what happened given what's in the article is the result of an investigative reporter. So I don't blame the guy for wanting to withhold comment.

However if it turns out that the AED was indeed under lock-and-key (with key not handy) and particularly that those attempting to render aid were prevented from doing so then T-W is in a world of hurt. (In the Great White North I think they'd be facing criminal charges... dunno about the US, but at the very least they're facing a wrongful death suit.)

-- Steve's place of work as an AED, but it's hanging in the lunch room where any employee can get to it without delay. (That's the point; the "A" stands for "automatic", and the thing's designed to be operated by folks with no first aid training.)

Almost certainly a civil, not a criminal, suit, which they will settle out of court.

I think the part that really made me angry was this: "Time Warner responded appropriately to a medical emergency. Our company has procedures in place to respond to emergencies."

If they're investigating the situation, they shouldn't start with the knee-jerk response that they "responded appropriately", imo.

Which is funny, because if the article is correct and this happened "last month", they'd had at least two weeks to get their press release story straight by the time the article ran.
