Ok, it's official, the Catholic church needs PR people. because there's no way shape or form that anyone with even the slightest idea of public relations would consider this even close to sensible

Also: If the Catholic Church is saying "dudes, you need some help with this sex scandal thing!" you are in serious trouble.

'Abstinence only' is gone now, right?

cos a bit of sex ed.. as in, children being taught what sex actually fucking IS, and when it's a good thing, and when it's a bad thing, and how to deal with the utterly massive emotional and mental issues that go along with it, would go an awful long way to making abuse /way/ easier to spot early. And in having a generation of young people that are actually able to cope with the real world.

and yeah, the Catholic Church would kinda have to change their entire perspective on sex to have even the vaguest hope of being remotely helpful in this regard.

The headline is now "Catholic official: Church aims to confront abuse, work with educators after Penn State scandal".

I'm not entirely sure what the church is trying to say: "...launched a nationwide program to train children, parents and teachers to look for signs of abuse and how to respond if they witness it."

So...the onus is on the kids, parents and teachers to look out for these signs of abuse, even as the Church continues to shelter known pedophile priests and transfer them around different parishes when they "misbehave?"
WTF dudes? What does this mean exactly - "At least now you'll know FOR SURE your kid is being molested, since you took that class. What do you mean 'call the cops on the pedo priest'? No no no! We will take care of it: we'll just transfer him! Not your problem any more!"

Yes, basically.

No Catholic can contribute anything meaningful to any discussion of child abuse, because if they had anything worthwhile to contribute they would not currently be an active material supporter of the world's largest child-rape cult.

Once Catholicism stops being PRIMARILY about covering up the abuse of children, it might be able to start addressing, I don't know, let's start with EVERY OTHER stupid thing it does. But it's the "fucking kids" sacrament that I personally object to most.
