The University of Kentucky have managed to read this document:

That's a scroll that was burned sometime around 500CE, found by archaeologists decades ago. It turns out if you x-ray the fuck out of it you can get enough data to have a computer separate out the layers of the scroll and digitally "unroll" it, resulting in output that looks kind of like this:

That's Hebrew, and it begins "The LORD summoned Moses and spoke to him". It's a copy of Leviticus.

But my point is, we can read burned books, by examining the ashes.

From the opposite side of this development, this is why you must stir the ashes after burning if you need to keep your data secure from a well funded and determined adversary. But considering that all security is about delaying an attacker until the information gained is no longer relavent this seems adequate.
