Ah, yes, the "Student Academic Freedom" bill. Submitted by House Education Chairman Dennis Baxley, the goal is apparently to protect students by having them never have to encounter anything they disagree with.

"Students have a right," the bill intones, "to expect that their academic freedom and the quality of their education will not be infringed upon by instructors who persistently introduce controversial matter into the classroom"

Oh noes!

We wouldn't want the students to have to think!
That would be horrible!

You forgot the "... that serves no legitimate pedagogical purpose." part.

I'm of two minds on this. Yes, I think the way the bill is written is asinine and leaves them open to all KINDS of problems.

However, I also had at least a half-dozen professors from whom I never learned ANYTHING, because 90% of their lectures were diatribes on their personal pet agendas that were totally unrelated to the course material at hand. So the part of me that always wanted to slap them upside the head and tell them to shut the hell up and TEACH, kind of understands where this bill originated from, even if it got neutered and brainwashed before it got to the table. :/

Diatribe teachers are good for nap time. And what state does Baxley represent so I can harangue people from there to vote for someone else?
