"Wait a second, you're in the mail server right now?"

"Yeah."

"How did you get in without an account?"

"I guessed the root password. By the way, your root password is insecure."

Nowhere near that simple. It's not a bad password, just guessable when you know what I know.

I generally use alphanumericsymbolics; I've got one twelve characters long that I can remember with a mnemonic.

My guess would be. . .

Userid: Admin
Password: Admin

That would be great to do something like that!

Is it a bad password, or just guessable when one knows what you know?

Take a word that is not found in common English dictionaries. An uncommon nonsense word is best, but something transliterated from Kurdish or Klingon (or similar) will do. Names of your kids or pets will not do.

Spell it in 1337 or B1FF!. Bonus points for "'leet-like" letter transpositions or flat-out misspellings, if you can remember them.

Put a random but memorable punctuation mark between two syllables in the word.

It's not quite as secure as a purely random alphanumeric sequence, but it's nearly there and it should be much easier to remember.

-- Steve uses the above technique when the quarterly IS update in the office demands sacrifice. Again, it's not perfect but it'll usually do.
