There's only 36 possibilities. Brute-force IS a valid formal derivation.

I worked out 25/36 odds in a similar way - assuming that half the battle had already been won, so therefore eliminate as impossible those solutions where neither number was a 6, work out how many we had left.

And yeah, the human brain does not do statistics.
