I just typo'd and took out the /usr/ directory on the backup SQL server.

I am now receiving a golf clap from my co-workers.

You have my heartfelt sympathy.

Is it going to be hard to unfuck it?

Nope. Already fixed, in fact - LiveCD, yanked over the working versions from a working machine, and once some little things like "sshd" and "apt" and "rsync" were working again, I could fix the rest.

Just.... AAAAAAAGGGH.

Also? It was the backup. Wiping it and resyncing entirely was not out of the question. Which makes me feel better, a bit.

These things happen. I've wiped a few things I shouldn't have in my time (and put stupid bugs into production too)

Hang on, I thought you were in one of those civilized countries that had a public holiday today.

[after a quick lmgtfm] ... so, you're in one of the two provinces that don't?

Also, I'm sure you're aware of the (utterly baffling) annual British outrage-storm over the wearing or not of poppies - have you read this (http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/fisk/robert-fisk-do-those-who-flaunt-the-poppy-on-their-lapels-know-that-they-mock-the-war-dead-6257416.html) rather interesting opinion piece?

Nope. No public holiday, only a bank and government holiday. It's a scandal, annually.

I hadn't seen that, no.

I'm in a civilised country that _doesn't_ have a public holiday today (yesterday). I suppose it is ironic that I was at a all-weekend Remembrance event.

True Story: ex-boss took out /etc because it was clearly a temp directory for storing random crap and he wanted to clear up space on the server. I forget which command's absence tipped people off...

If he'd taken out /etc, I'd imagine the lack of important things like passwd entries would have made itself evident in short order.

Hmm. I do remember hearing about the words "I can't log in", followed by "so what did you touch?" followed by the infamous "Nothing..."
